Safety and Supervision

No child will ever be left alone or unsupervised!

All children must be brought into the main day care area by a parent or guardian. Each child will be signed in and signed out on the daily log by a staff member. This process ensures that staff is aware of your child's arrival and departure and allows important information to be shared regarding your child at these times. No cell phones are permitted in the school during drop off and pick up times. There are telephones available in the director's office and the main play areas at each site.

YOU MUST DIAL 9 FIRST FOR AN OUTSIDE LINE! (Example: 9-911)

Fire drills are held each month and staff will follow the fire evacuation plan posted in the main play area, in the classrooms, and in the office/staff area of each site. The designated meeting place is the Veteran's Memorial Flagpole in the parking lot. In the case of a total Breckenridge Village evacuation, the children will be transported to the gymnasium at Willoughby South High School. All fire drills are documented and copies are periodically mailed upon request to the State Fire Marshall.

Safety drills are held once per month and staff will follow the safety drill procedures posted in the main play area, in the classrooms, and in the office at each site. Children will be taken to the safe location denoted on the evacuation map posted at each site. The Willoughby Police Department will supervise this drill once per year for accuracy and efficiency.

Tornado/Severe Weather drills will be held every month and staff will follow the procedures posted in the main play area, in the classrooms and in the office at each site. Children will be taken to the safe location denoted on the evacuation map posted at each site. Each drill will be documented and copies sent upon request to the Willoughby Fire Department.

Spray aerosols are never used when children are present in the center.

All personal items belonging to staff are kept locked or out of reach of the children.

All injuries, even the most minor, will be mentioned to the parent at pick up and will be documented on an incident/injury report. Only soap, water, ice and band-aids can be used to treat injuries.

All infants will be placed on their back to sleep. A physician must give written permission for a child to be put to sleep on their stomach.

It is the legal obligation of the center to report all suspected situations of child abuse and neglect. Any employee who suspects that a child's physical or mental health/welfare is at risk due to abuse or neglect MUST immediately report it. The report shall be made to Ohio Department of Job and Family Services as mandated by state law.

Proper safety procedures will be followed on all trips, whether routine or an outing. First Aid Kits, permission slips and child files will be taken as required. The children will wear nametags or bracelets, with center information, when they go on trips leaving Breckenridge Village property. Staff ratios are always maintained on walks and outings.

All parents must sign a water safety permission slip each summer.

Please note that the speed limit within Breckenridge Village property is 15 MPH! Please drive carefully for the safety of the residents, staff, and children

Any person picking up your child who is not known to staff will be asked for photo identification. No child will be released to a person unable to provide photo ID!
