Guidance and Management Policy
Developing social skills and learning acceptance of structure and rules are central aspects of a child's development. It is essential that the guidance and structure provided by adults serve to enhance a child's feelings of self-confidence and self-worth.
Our policy on discipline is based on the belief that all children should learn through positive reinforcement. All staff has been instructed in the center's philosophy of guidance and management of children. The following guidelines apply to all persons who are employed by the center and all staff will approach a behavior management issue in the following manner:
- The staff will evaluate the situation, allowing time for the children to resolve the conflict. Immediate intervention will occur if any child's safety is at risk.
- The staff will re-direct the child into safer, more productive play and encourage the children to problem solve to resolve the conflict.
- If re-direction is not successful, the child may be removed from the situation and given supervised time away at the "Thinking Chair"/"Quiet Corner". This time period will last one minute per age of the child.
- The staff will process with the child the reason for the time away and help the child brainstorm alternate behaviors to use in the future.
- The child will be re-introduced into group play.
Structure and limits are most successful when the environment is warm and supportive, and the child clearly knows what the behavior expectation is. All guidance methods are implemented in this manner. Corporal (physical) punishment will never be used with your child and is strictly against State and Center Policies.
